XTO Faces Criminal Charges For Drilling Wastewater Dumping And Ranks In Top 10 For Violations

XTO issued a strongly worded response to the news that a grand jury had recommended it be indicted and that Attorney General Kane had filed criminal charges against it.  Here's the rest of the story.

I was Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection in 2010, when a DEP inspector found XTO tanks containing drilling wastewater with open valves. Up to 57,000 gallons was discharged into the environment. It was a serious incident that I thought the Attorney General's office should investigate.

The State Impact report to which I link also states that XTO ranks in the top 10 in the number of violations, even though it does not rank in the top 10 in the number of gas wells drilled in Pennsylvania.  The best way to avoid trouble with the law is to pursue operational excellence. XTO needs to ask itself some hard questions more than it needs to blast Attorney General Kane.
