Stunning Fact: First Class Mail Volume Drops 29%

The same forces that have savaged many daily newspapers have caused a 29% decline in the last decade in the first class mail volumes of the US postal service. The US postal service projects a 50% decline by 2020.

Simply put, folks are using the internet and phones to pay bills and to communicate, replacing envelopes, letters, and stamps. Electricity is delivering messages in seconds and replacing trucks and oil that take days.

The loss of mail volume and revenue has put the US postal service at the edge of bankruptcy and is forcing the closing of post offices in especially rural areas and other service cuts.

I, for one, still love receiving a letter or card in the mail.
